Some illustrations begin with a sketch. This one began with a place. 💙 Bon Voyage Chonkers was inspired by my time living in San Francisco and the many afternoons I spent exploring the waterfront around Pier 39. The boats, the Bay Bridge, and the energy of the harbor left such an impression on me that I knew I wanted to capture that feeling in an illustration. The result is the recently famous 2000 pound sea lion setting off on his new adventure…a playful tribute to one of my favorite cities and the memories I made there. To make this piece even more special, I experimented with gold foil printing for the very first time, adding a little extra shimmer to the sunlight and details. The moment of truth… After illustrating, preparing the foil files, and patiently waiting, my very first foil prints are finally here! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but seeing the gold foil catch the light in person really exceeded my expectations. It’s one thing to see the artwork on a screen, but the metallic finish adds so much depth and warmth that photos and videos can only hint at. This is Bon Voyage Chonkers, my newest limited edition art print. Trying something new! I’ve always loved the look of foil art prints, so I finally decided to give them a try with my latest illustration, Bon Voyage Chonkers. I expected the setup to be complicated, but creating the foil layer was actually much simpler than I imagined. In this reel I’m sharing a peek behind the scenes…from sketching the artwork in Procreate to creating the separate foil layer that tells the printer where the gold accents will go.
